Second render in a different pose.
I set out to design a unique sonic screwdriver, a central device to the TV show Doctor Who. For the uninitiated, a sonic screwdriver is a highly advanced tool carried by time lords, more specifically, the Doctor. They function as literal plot devices, able to do just about anything needed to push the plot forward, such as unlocking a door, detecting an alien, or resonating concrete.
My screwdriver is heavily inspired by Mat Smith's, in that it has a extending function featuring four claws. In my design, the claws and glowing bit extend, while an outer segment retracts, causing sway arms to extend. While this is more complex mechanically, it insures that the sway arms are actually out of the way when the device is retracted for stowing.
I chose a unique color for the glow effect as well as some interesting color themes. The sway arms and claws are nickel, while the handle is a rough cut of marble with gold leaf inlays. Ideally, the extending and retraction movement would be powered, unlike previous screwdrivers which require the user to manipulate the extension.
